Anchors and Sutures

Dr Strobos designed his own anchors that is used during rotator cuff surgery. The anchors Dr Strobos designed is a 7mm anchor – compared to the standard 4 or 5mm anchors that most of the surgeon’s use. The reason for this is that Rotator cuff tears appear mostly in older patients that suffers from osteo-arthritis. Because of this the bone is more fragile and a smaller anchor is more likely to pull out of the bone than the bigger anchor Dr Strobos designed.

Secondly, the suture that is attached to the anchor is also thicker. Most of the Rotator Cuff Repair Surgeries that fail is due to the suture that tears through the muscle because the suture is too thin. The Suture Dr Strobos is using is thicker so the chance of it tearing through the muscle is far less than the standard suture. For this reason, Dr Strobos doesn’t have Rotator Cuff Repairs that fails due to anchor or suture failures.

The PEEKay Corkscrew 7mm anchor features the following:

The anchor is made from the highest-grade PEEK Optima (polyetheretherketone) imported from the Invibio Biomaterials UK.

PEEK is chosen for its mechanical similarity to bone and a recognised standard globally across the orthopaedic market.

The anchor is proudly designed, developed and precision made and hand assembled in South Africa.

The anchor features a single strain of #5 Deknatel Force Fibre (Teleflex France) used in a single row technique.

The larger single suture and anchor combination is more effective as opposed to thinner multiple sutures and anchors which create implant crowding and sever the soft tissue.

The anchor features a large pitch thread corkscrew design which minimizes the risk of anchor pull out.

The anchor further features a male hex minimizing risk of the anchor stripping in situ.
